Tai Chi Chuan Classes

We offer daily classes in the Netherlands, with regular sessions held in Rotterdam, Delft, and surrounding areas. In addition to weekly classes, we organize workshops throughout the year to deepen practice and connection.

Teaching in Portugal is steadily growing, with classes currently available in the Porto area and occasional weekend workshops and the annual retreat. At this stage, our focus in Portugal is especially on training potential new teachers, offering guidance and structure for those who wish to step into a teaching role and carry the practice forward.

Tai Chi Chuan has its roots in Taoist meditation and self-defense, both of which remain an integral part of the teachings presented by the ITCCA today. Yang Cheng-Fu is remembered for saying, “Tai Chi Chuan is meditation in movement.” Through practicing the form, the mind becomes calmer in motion. The accompanying mental and energetic techniques support overall health and well-being. Training includes a range of distinct skills:

Trial lesson

A trial lesson offers a non-committal introduction to Tai Chi Chuan, the instructor, and the teaching method used within the ITCCA. It’s a great opportunity to get a first impression of what to expect in the regular classes. A trial lesson lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes. For clothing, comfortable pants, a T-shirt or sweater, and white socks as footwear are sufficient. The original Yang style, as taught within the European ITCCA network of schools, focuses on three elements: personal health, meditation, and martial arts. Taoist health exercises, meditation, and Qigong play an important role in developing skill in the martial art.

Beginners course

A regular beginner course consists of 10 lessons spread over 10 weeks. The course focuses on learning the Tai Chi form step-by-step. Participants are also introduced to essential Tai Chi practices such as Taoist health exercises, standing Qigong, and meditation. Each class lasts 1.5 hours. In addition, students can attend weekly practice sessions twice a week or join a parallel group for extra classes. Cost: €145.00 incl. 9% VAT (15% discount for students). This includes a €5.00 membership fee for ITCCA Europe. General terms and conditions apply.

Rejuvenate the spirit beginners course

This 10-week course introduces participants to a rich set of traditional exercises taught within our Tai Chi Chuan tradition: Qi Kung, Taoist health exercises, meditation, and Taoist self-massage. These practices enhance body awareness, promote relaxation, and foster more efficient movement — often resulting in noticeably increased energy. We teach these disciplines in line with our school’s tradition and the original Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan as taught in the ITCCA. The course can stand on its own, or serve as a preparatory foundation for eventually learning the Tai Chi form. These classes are especially suited for those who (for now) find learning the Tai Chi Chuan form challenging, whether due to personal preference or physical limitations. It also serves as a traditional stepping stone — beginning with internal energy (Qi Kung) before progressing to dynamic meditation and martial form work. Each class lasts 1 hour. Sunday practice sessions or extra participation in parallel classes are also possible. After the initial 10 weeks, classes can be continued through monthly membership. The same exercises will be practiced with increasing depth. Cost: €145.00 incl. 9% VAT (15% discount for students). Includes €5.00 membership for ITCCA Europe. General terms and conditions apply. After completing a Rejuvenate course, students can continue classes via monthly registration.

Follow- up classes

After the Beginner Course in Tai Chi Chuan, weekly classes continue to deepen understanding and gradually build the Tai Chi form. The full form is taught in three phases and typically takes about two years to master. Each phase is a complete unit, but must be studied in order. Upon completion of the form, further development focuses on six in-depth stages, along with partner work. Weapon forms (sword, saber) are typically taught in workshops. For Rejuvenate course participants, follow-up classes continue and expand upon the learned material. Cost of follow-up classes: €58.00 per month (incl. 9% VAT) + an annual ITCCA Europe membership fee of €31.00. Note: Holidays are included in the pricing. There is no pause in payments during the Christmas or summer breaks. In summer, we organize assisted group training to continue practicing together.

Private classes

If it's practically not feasible to follow weekly classes and your are able to practice independently, private lessons may be an option. These lessons are basically intended for students enrolled in the teacher training program, as preparation for their exams (typically requiring 4–6 lessons, depending on the type of exam). Students with specific questions may also opt for private lessons, or a combination of private sessions and Structural Integration treatments. Cost for a private lesson: €65.00 incl. 9% VAT.
